Speed up eviction petition gets 2,000 signatures

Wednesday 3rd November 2010

A campaign aimed at speeding up the eviction of bad tenants has attracted 2,000 signatures in just one month.

It can currently take a landlord months to take possession of a property, because of the need to go to court. County Courts currently have a log-jam of cases which is likely to worsen as many courts are due for closure in the wake of public spending cuts.

Tenants in arrears frequently stay on for months in properties, continuing to pay no rent.

The Rebalancing the Law petition, which closes this Friday, will be presented to Downing Street by Paul Shamplina, of eviction specialists Landlord Action, and Mike Weatherley MP.

Shamplina said: “The eviction process takes far too long – something that Landlord Action sees on a daily basis – and 2,000 landlords are now asking the Government to recognise landlords’ concerns and to begin taking steps to improve the situation.”

The campaign has had wide backing.

Mike Stimpson, of the Southern Landlords Association, said: “Why should any private landlord be required, by law, to continue to provide a service (often for up to six months) when the client will not pay for it?”

Letting agent Sally Lawson said: “Landlords are adding value to the residential housing needs and are being unnecessarily punished, and in some cases losing their property, all because of a tardy judicial system.

Letting agent association merges with landlord body

Monday 25th October 2010
The National Landlords Association has confirmed it is to join forces with the UK Association of Letting Agents (UKALA).
Members of UKALA, which represents more than 500 letting agents, voted at their AGM for the move.
David Salusbury, NLA chairman, said: “This is an excellent opportunity to create a more unified voice for landlords, tenants and letting agents across the private rented sector.
“Landlords and agents represent two sides of the same coin and this mutually beneficial business agreement will benefit both as we strive for higher standards of practice.”
Under the agreement, the NLA will assume responsibility for management of UKALA and provide advice and information to its member agents

Avoiding IDENTITY FRAUD

IDENTITY FRAUD

Identity Fraud is the UK's latest growing type of fraud. There is one case of identity theft committed every four minutes and it is costing UK consumers more than £1.3 billion each year. Fraudsters are able to steal an identity by simply getting hold of personal details - from documents such as bank statements, credit card receipts and bills. A common way of gaining this information is through 'bin raiding' the simple act of delving through household waste to find personal documents.

How can you avoid becoming a victim?

- Shred ALL paperwork which reveals personal information such as bank statements, shopping receipts, personal correspondence ets.

- Always keep important documents, plastic cards and cheque books in a safe and secure place. Keep cheque books and cards separately.

- Don't share personal information unless you are entirely confident you know who you are dealing with. Beware the bogus e-mails.

- Always check bank statements, and check receipts against your statements carefully.

- Contact your bank or building society immediately if you are concerned about an expenditure you do not recognise.

- Be aware that your post is valuable information in the wrong hands.

- If you move house make sure you contact your and all other organisations to give them your change of address (the Post Office can redirect post on request).
